Extending Media Workflows Into the Cloud

Media and Entertainment organizations are ideal candidates to harness the power of the Cloud. Constantly faced with tight project deadlines and competing for new projects, they need to act quickly to spin up infrastructure to catch up or add capacity for project wins. Augmenting their own infrastructure and “bursting” to the cloud to gain access to more compute power at peak times is the ideal use case for VFX and Post Production studios. Expanding computational resources into the cloud is a great way for facilities of any size to stay on schedule and compete for more projects.

The Challenge

The allure of cloud computing for applications such as rendering and transcoding is significant. At first glance, the ability to instantly ‘spin-up’ large quantities of compute resources in a short period of time appears to be the perfect solution for accelerating large or behind-schedule projects. However, the extra time, complexity and cost involved in moving data back an forth between on-premise storage and cloud resources can leave many content creators frustrated and out of pocket.

PixStor in the Cloud Makes it Easy

Getting your data to and from the cloud introduces complexity, increasing delivering times and cost. PixStor in the Cloud removes this complexity by seamlessly extending your on-premise storage into the cloud. It minimizes latency between where the data is stored and where it is processed, ensuring the fastest possible completion times, getting more render jobs done at the lowest instance cost.

All the power of PixStor - with push-button deployment.

With incredibly simple push button deployment, media and entertainment organisations can take advantage of all of the performance, scalability and data management benefits of an on-premise PixStor installation in – within GCP and AWS Marketplaces.

Driven from guided menus with a variety of sizing options, there is a PixStor in the Cloud option available for nearly any use case – whether for burst render, remote composition, editing or grading, presenting a single NFS or SMB share from a number of clustered instances. With billing handled entirely within Cloud marketplaces, customers are free to spin up PixStor at exactly the moment they need it.

Key Benefits:

  • Combines On-Premise, Cloud & Object storage into single integrated namespace
  • Supports Tens of Thousands of Render Instances
  • Multi-Region, Multi-Provider Scalability
  • Limitless, Efficient Capacity with Object Tiers
  • Reduces Egress Charges & Job Start times with Selective Data Movement Direct
  • Integration with Render Managers such as Deadline and OpenCue
  • Standard Connectivity Options such as NFS & SMB
  • Full Access Control List & Active Directory Support
  • Sizing Templates for Push-Button Architecture Deployment

Seamless On-Prem & Cloud Integration: Powered by Ngenea

Every PixStor installation in the cloud is bundled with Ngenea, Pixit Media’s flagship data transport mechanism.

Ngenea bridges the gap between silos of data on premise and in the cloud and allows hybrid pipeline architectures to be constructed rapidly. It differs from traditional sync or caching technologies by allowing the automatic transfer of only the data that is needed between on-premise and the cloud. Having this level of intelligence in the data transport helps you to meet your deadlines by allowing work to start faster, while reducing significant egress and infrastructure costs through the elimination of unnecessary file copies.

With Ngenea able to transport data to both NAS targets and object storage, large-scale work or collaborative requirements, which need data selectively distributed to multiple regions, can leverage the extremely fast wide-area network technology available from Cloud platforms. Completed work can then be collected and sent back to a central location automatically, removing the need to manually copy data from one region to the next. And it does this without the customer requiring fast links into all of the various regions available. This scale can even be extended to multiple cloud providers simultaneously, giving customers options over the most appropriate place to run various parts of their pipeline from within the cloud.

Ngenea integrates directly with popular render management software such as Deadline and OpenCue, allowing applications to drive the flow of data according to need and demand. At launch of a new job or project, the managing application instructs Ngenea to transfer exactly the right data at exactly the right time. And with a simple API and robust multi-region aware transfer queue, adding new integrations is a snap.

Within a cloud-based PixStor environment, Ngenea can be used to transparently migrate data to lower cost object storage, requiring less online volume storage to meet a given capacity requirement. This feature also enables data to be safely and securely parked when projects complete and the PixStor needs to be “spun down”.
